What Are Affirmations?

An affirmation is a little phrase that you repeat to yourself. The phrase signifies a belief, or idea, that you want to train your mind to accept. It’s like a method of self-programming.

Talking to yourself? Sounds like something a crazy person would do.

I’ll tell you what’s crazy: forgetting your highest goals and allowing circumstances to dictate your life. Affirmations help us remember, and stay focused, on what is truly important to us.

For example, let’s say you’ve decided to become more forgiving, or whatever trait you wish to experience. To affirm it, you just mindfully repeat to yourself “I am forgiving,” “I am forgiving,”and really practice feeling forgiveness rising up from within while you call it into being.

And if you can’t just summon a feeling like that yet, that’s OK. That’s why you are practicing. Instead you can summon a mental image which relates to that feeling, which gently increases it.

Like for our example of forgiveness, imagine a grumpy person in front of you that you are softening by forgiving them. You can let go of the image once you see the feeling and lock onto the way you are creating it.
