Why I Plan on Releasing Singles Instead of Albums
(For a While)
I see albums as important packages of an artist’s worldview, style, and best work at the time. They can tell one cohesive story like a symphony of smaller pieces or a trilogy of novels.
They’re valuable, but they also only count as one release — just one opportunity to please and develop fans.
Having some experience making EPs, I know they can feel like a giant project that takes a lot of time and effort to produce, only to fall flat when finally released.
Singles, on the other hand, provide a lot more opportunities to make noise and keep attention — especially for a beginner artist like me.
Singles Mean More Action
If you’re documenting your journey on social media, the story arc from freshly-written song to newly-released track is much tighter with singles.
At this scale, your day to day events are much more important and interesting because the goal isn’t that far off. Each step is a bigger chance to move forward or fail.
Singles Mean More Attention
It doesn’t seem right to bother the world for the 1,000th time — “hey, look at the same project I’ve been promoting for a year now”
