There was a moment for me where some things clicked. Jordan Peterson suggested "God" is whatever someone's highest value is (they act to serve that god, and a god is a metaphor for a leading value), and then there's the quote that "God is love." What if history and religion is really just the story of humanity slowly realizing compassion ought to be our highest value?
I do think compassion and darwinian stuff go together. Logically, all the species hating each other is not good for any of the species. compassion might be the best way to propagate our DNA throughout the universe in the end.
