The Christian, The Atheist, And Mephisto
A playful narrative poem
“God is Truth!” said the christian
Slamming down his Bible on the table
The gold of the pages shivered
“God is a lie!” said the atheist
Who burned the bible and the table
With a flamethrower made of science
“Man and God — lies using lies to persuade Truth” said Mephisto
Who perched nearby, and folded up his leather wings
“I know logic!” said one
“I know reality!” said the other
Neither noticed Mephisto at all
“I know seven thousand secrets” Mephisto whispered
And on the burnt spot where the table was,
He placed books by Nietzsche, Rand, Buddha, Milton, Blake,
Peterson, Jung, Baudrillard, and a thousand other prophets
And neither noticed Mephisto at all
And the christian and the atheist kept fighting
And fighting and fighting and fighting
Until it became dark
“Surely you have dragged me into Hell!” said the christian
Beating the face of the atheist
