The Buddha certainly thought ego-annihilation was the answer, with his teaching of No-self to contrast his environment's hindu idea of Self/Atman. I kind of think the modern answer is more like: you have an ego, that's just a fact. Repressing the ego causes it to lash out. But we could instead integrate the ego into our "higher" thing that we serve, like love. So I don't think the ego needs to be destroyed, but transcended, organized, conquered alive.
