What Is Big 5 Personality Theory?

In the 1980s, scientists studying personality rounded up a bunch of data from other personality survey experiments, and performed factor analysis. They discovered a a pattern in the data: certain words were deeply associated to each other, no matter how the test was designed.

If someone was reported to be friendly, then they were also usually compassionate. If someone was reported to be nervous, that was associated with words like sensitive.
